Slip rings may look simple, but their surface condition requires precise evaluation. The challenge many asset owners face is that unqualified service providers often make the wrong judgment about whether the finishing is acceptable. This not only wastes time and money but also risks long-term generator reliability.

Common Mistakes Made by Inexperienced Service Companies

  • Declaring surfaces “good enough” after rough polishing without measuring run-out or roughness
  • Using visual checks only, without proper instrumentation
  • Failing to meet IEEE or OEM-specified Ra values for surface finish
  • Over-machining, which unnecessarily reduces slip ring life
  • Ignoring concentricity, leading to premature sparking even after so-called “repair”

The Risk of the “Assuming Game”

One of the biggest problems we see in the industry is service providers who play the assuming game. Instead of confirming tolerances with proper measurements, they assume that a polished-looking surface is acceptable. This approach often results in:

  • Slip rings returned to service still outside OEM tolerances
  • Continued sparking and brush wear within days of commissioning
  • Unnecessary repeat outages because the root cause was never corrected
  • Asset owners bearing additional costs after being misled by poor judgment

In many of these cases, the surfaces were initially declared “acceptable,” but our inspection revealed run-out and surface roughness still outside OEM tolerances. As a result, the unit was not approved for installation or return to service until machining results were corrected and fully verified.

Our team ensured that:

  • Run-out was restored to within OEM tolerance (≤0.05 mm)
  • Surface roughness achieved Ra 1.0–1.6 µm • At least 95% brush contact was confirmed
  • A documented machining report was provided for client assurance

By holding to this standard, we prevented premature sparking, overheating, and costly repeat outages.
